Making news this month...

No-dinner dinner?

From: PDG Steve Robeson

Announcing the first annual LIONS OF 4-C1 NO-DINNER Melvin Jones DINNER:

To: All Melvin Jones Fellows (and everyone else too!!):

Purpose: To raise funds each year to purchase a Melvin Jones Fellowship(s) for a Lion(s) in our district.

Plan: To make the event as simple and easy as possible for Lions who are already busy and already travel and expend their resources for Lions on a frequent basis.

Execution: Instead of spending $4.25 per gallon of gas ($45 for the event?), one night in a motel ($100), competing for our time on busy weekends, enduring another raffle (yuck), and having to try to digest some form of “roadkill”, we can save as much as $200 apiece!

How: Let’s just send a check!! I got a printout from LCI and tried to estimate how much each of us needs to contribute. I figure we have around 75 MJF holders who are still active Lions. If most of them actually contribute $25 each would probably generate the needed revenue.

Added Benefit: We could present it (them) at the Transitional Meeting this month. We could select at random from names in a hat, one per club.

So: Send your check to me and we’ll do something special!!!

Cure Breast Cancer Walk-A-Thon

City of Hope Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer
San Francisco – October 4, 2008

Mark your calendar – October 4, 2008 – San Francisco City of Hope Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer! Join our District 4-C1 Team …

With the approval and support of DG Bob Garr and IPDG Skip O’Brien, I accept the challenge of our fellow Lions in District 4-C6 and formed a District 4-C1 Lions team. Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer is a national family-orientated, non-competitive walk that raises funds to support breast cancer research, education, and treatment programs at City of Hope, The 5K walk starts at the Justin Herman Plaza, follows the Embarcadero, circles the AT&T Park, and returns to the Plaza.

The Walk of Hope festival will include sponsor bottles with giveaways, a Kid’s Pavilion, a Dedication Wall for participants to pay tribute to those affected by breast cancer, and a Survivor Booth with special benefits for breast cancer survivors.

I urge you, your family, and your friends, to join me for a great showing of Lionism in raising funds for City of Hope! More information will be mailed to your club and sent out via e-mail. Questions now? Call me, our District 4-C1 Lions Team Captain VDG Becki Stange, at 530-873-1819 or contact me at rebeccastange@comcast.net

Take me out to the ball game...

The North and South teams split this year’s annual high school all-star baseball and softball games arranged by the Chico Breakfast Lions Club.

The North pummeled the South, 11-2, in the third annual girl’s softball game giving the North a 2-1 series edge. The South pushed across six runs in the third inning and won its second straight Bob Busch Classic boys baseball game, 6-2. The North leads overall 4-2. The games were played in Chico on May 31 (softball) and June 1 (baseball).

The games follow the format of the district’s football game with North players chosen from schools from Red Bluff to the Oregon border. The South draws all-stars from as far south as the Sacramento Delta. Participants are graduating seniors.

Net proceeds are used for the club’s community service endeavors. Incoming club president Bill Padula headed the games’ organizing committee. The all-star weekend include a barbecue hosted by the Lions for players, their families, coaches, and other special guests.

District 4-C1 has responded to the Ophir Fire in Oroville. The District Governor has assigned VDGE Becki Stange with the task of coordinating the efforts of the Gridley Lions to provide emergency funds for those families which have lost their homes. Vouchers for purchases at Wal-Mart are being provided.

VDGE Becki is currently working to arrange similar relief for the evacuees from the area of the Humboldt Fire in Chico.

Contributions for the relief efforts may be sent to Cabinet Treasurer, PDG Dave Marceau.  Make checks payable to Lions District 4-C1 Disaster Fund.

CSFII Update

Congratulations!!! The overwhelming support that District 4-C1 has shown for Campaign Sight First II has more than met our expectations. Worldwide, to date, Lions have pledged or contributed more than $167 million in the effort to end preventable blindness.

June 27, 2008, marks the official end of the campaign for solicitation so there is still an opportunity to reach the stretch goal of $200 million. That is not to say that the funds must be collected by that date. It is only necessary that they be pledged. The actual donations may be paid over the next three to five years.

All of the funds raised, beyond the first $150 million, will be used in the developed nations to find ways to end causes for preventable blindness such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and other serious afflictions.

So, each of us and our clubs can still make a commitment to raise funds and contribute over the next few years without yet writing a check.

Discuss and decide ways your club and members can provide the gift of sight:

bulletMake a Club Commitment, payable over three to five years
bulletThree over three – Designate one new Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) for CSF II each year for the next three years to save as many as 500 people from blindness.
bulletPromote ‘The Power of 30’ – Each Lion in your club that makes a US $180 donation to CSF II saves 30 people from blindness
bulletHold an additional club fund-raising event or activity and designate funds to CSF II
