Tulelake, Pleasant Valley Coaches Picked for All-Star Baseball Game

Tulelake's Dean Teig and Pleasant Valley's (Chico) Ron Souza have been  picked by their peers to be the North and South coaches for the Chico Breakfast Lions Club Fifth Annual High School All-Star Baseball Game to be played Sunday, June 3 at Chico's Hooker Oak recreation complex.

The game involves the best 18 seniors from schools from Red Bluff to the Oregon border against a like number representing schools as far south as the Sacramento Delta.

The game is the Bob Busch Classic, named in memory of a former breakfast Lions president and longtime Chico area youth baseball supporter.

Coaches in the North and South regions voted this winter for candidates who were eligible by posting league or division championships in 2006.

On Saturday night, June 2, the Chico Breakfast Lions Club will have its Second Annual Girls' North-South All-Star Softball Game in the same complex.  Softball coaches have yet to be named.

Baseball and softball all-stars will be nominated this spring by school coaches and selected by a committee composed of the all-star head coaches, their assistants, and Lions club members.

The North has won the four previous all-star baseball battles behind the coaching efforts of Bob Anderson of Central Valley (2003 and 2004), Jim Morley of Shasta High (Redding) (2005), and Scott Pynes of Etna (2006).  South mentors have been Jeff Ingles of Winters (2003), Jack Danielson of Paradise (2004), the late Bob Hill of Biggs (2005), and Eric Lay of Maxwell (2006). The girls' North team won the inaugural softball contest last year with the coaching match up of Greg Anderson (North) of Anderson High School versus Ken Mason of Hamilton High School.

Teig's Tulelake nine (19-2) won the Division 4 North Section championship after winning the Evergreen League title at 8-0. Others in that league are Dunsmuir, Big Valley (Bieber), Butte Valley (Dorris) and Happy Camp.

Souza's PV Vikings were last year's North Section Division 1 champion. They had a 19-6 season and tied with Paradise at 9-5 as the league's best. Other EAL schools are Shasta (Redding), Chico, Red Bluff, Foothill (Palo Cedro), Enterprise (Redding) and Lassen (Susanville). Pleasant Valley leads all high schools in the number of its players chosen for the games.

District clubs are invited to place ads in the game program and ALL LIONS AND LIONESSES WILL BE ADMITTED FREE TO BOTH ALL-STARS GAMES IF THEY WEAR CLUB VESTS.  For more information contact Bob Pentzer at 893-0507 or Bobkay@sbcglobal.net.
